What can be said: this work involved on-site research at clinical locations serving Black and Latinx communities, during a period when well-child visit rates had declined. The goal was to understand which patient communication materials resonated, and which didn’t, with the families these clinics were trying to reach.
Being present as both a researcher and interpreter meant occupying an unusual position: close enough to the community to understand what the materials were missing, and close enough to the institution to help translate that gap into something actionable. The most important insights from this work didn’t come from the materials themselves. They came from what patients said while holding them.
That experience of doing research at the intersection of health systems and underserved communities, in the room where the distance between institutional intention and community reality becomes visible, is foundational to how I think about who AI systems in healthcare are actually designed to serve.
